Senior Designer

Netflorist

Date: 3 days ago
City: Krugersdorp, Gauteng
Contract type: Full time

NetFlorist was founded on Valentine’s Day 1999 and has grown into South Africa’s leading online flower and gifting company, and one of the country’s longest-running online retailers.

What began as a single web page of 12 floral arrangements now spans flowers, hampers, jewellery, perfumes, personalised gifts and baked goods, delivered from distribution hubs in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban. Our customers trust us with their most important moments, and our Marketing team is at the centre of how those moments look and feel.

About the role

As the Senior Designer, you own the quality, consistency and creative direction of NetFlorist’s design output, working alongside our creative agency, and you raise the standard of the team around you. You will do the Designer’s work at a higher level of craft and independence, and take responsibility for supervising the design team, improving how we work, adopting AI in production, and mentoring and developing junior designers.

You will report to the Marketing head and partner with Marketing, UX, corporate, partnerships, merchandising, content and UK colleagues to plan and deliver work across the website, email, social, print and large-format channels. The role is hands-on and carries real leadership responsibility, and it steps up around our biggest gifting peaks, such as Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.

Creative leadership and brand

  • Set and protect the creative standard, guarding brand consistency, visual identity and positioning across web, email, social and campaign work.
  • Lead concepts for major campaigns and seasonal peaks, using testing, research and trend insight to bring in new ideas.
  • Apply and champion digital best practice, including mobile-first design, engagement and conversion optimisation. This includes exploring new and exciting ways to design to make sure the team doesn’t get ‘stuck’ in a monotonous cycle of design.
  • Support the UK brand and design efforts for Oxford & Rose.

Team leadership and quality

  • Supervise the design team: allocate task lists, balance workloads and approve design elements before release.
  • Oversee production of artwork for web banners, the weekly emails, and print and large-format work such as vehicle branding and billboards.
  • Review the team’s output so that work goes out right first time, with strong visual quality and attention to detail.
  • Coach and develop designers through constructive feedback and hands-on guidance, so their capability grows and they need less senior intervention over time.

AI, efficiency and process

  • Lead the adoption of AI in production: evaluate and pilot AI tools, set guidelines for brand-safe and legally safe use, and build shared prompt libraries and AI-assisted workflows for the team.
  • Identify and establish efficiencies across design production, and track the gains in turnaround time, revision rounds and output per designer.
  • Improve the design process by sharpening briefs, building templates, streamlining production workflows and promoting asset reuse.

Collaboration and growth

  • Partner with the greater Marketing team, and with UX, partners, corporate, merchandising, UK and content teams, on planning and delivery.

Contribute to the team’s revenue growth target through the effectiveness of the creative you lead

  • A qualification in graphic design or a related field, or equivalent proven experience.
  • 5 or more years of design experience, ideally in e-commerce, retail or digital marketing.
  • 2 or more years of leading or mentoring others.
  • Expert use of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign CC and/or Figma
  • Videography skills and experience is a must-have
  • Intermediate to advanced experience in AI - assisted creative tools like Firefly, Gemini, Flux etc
  • A portfolio that shows brand stewardship, conversion-focused digital design, print and large-format work, and campaign leadership.
  • Proven ability to give clear, constructive feedback and to build repeatable design systems and processes.
  • Strong cross-functional communication, and calm under pressure with a record of meeting deadlines.
  • The ability to work from our Waterfall office four days a week.

Advantageous

  • HTML and email platform experience.
  • Adobe Animate, After Effects or Premiere Pro, or other video skills.
  • Experience with large-format or vehicle branding artwork.
  • Experience piloting or using AI design tools in a production workflow.
  • Experience reading web, email and campaign data and running creative tests

Skills and competencies

  • Advanced design craft and creative direction: expert layout, typography, colour and visual storytelling, and the ability to turn a brief into a distinctive campaign concept.
  • Tools and design systems: expert use of Adobe Creative Suite and/or Figma, including shared libraries, components and design tokens that speed up the whole team.
  • AI workflow design: evaluates and pilots AI design tools, builds prompt libraries and repeatable workflows, sets guardrails for brand fit, quality, copyright and disclosure, and trains the team to use them well.
  • Efficiency measurement: sets baselines and tracks turnaround times, revision rounds and output per designer, so time saved is visible and can be built on.
  • Brand stewardship: builds and maintains brand guidelines, templates and asset libraries, and makes clear, well-argued calls on what is on brand.
  • Digital and conversion design: mobile-first UX, conversion-focused pages, banners and email, and accessibility standards.
  • Design review and quality control: structured review, clear sign-off standards, and quick, specific feedback that stops errors reaching stakeholders.
  • Workflow and process design: enriches briefs as received, standardises templates and handovers, streamlines production and drives asset reuse.
  • Planning and prioritisation: allocates work across the team, estimates capacity and turnaround, and protects delivery through seasonal peaks.
  • Coaching and leadership: gives constructive feedback, teaches craft and process, and builds junior designers’ independence.
  • Data and testing: reads web, email and campaign data, and runs creative tests with the growth and e-commerce teams to link design decisions to revenue.
  • Stakeholder communication: presents and defends creative work to senior stakeholders, negotiates priorities across teams, and models continuous learning.

What success looks like

  • First 30 days: understand the business, the team, nuances and processes. Learn our brand guidelines, tools, workflows and team; review current output and briefs and room for improvements.
  • By 60 days: take over allocation and sign-off of the team’s work, and establish a baseline for turnaround time, revision rounds and output per designer.
  • By 90 days: lead a full campaign concept from brief to delivery, introduce one AI-assisted workflow or template improvement, and agree a development plan for each junior designer.

Performance is reviewed each year (1 August to 31 July) against agreed KPIs covering growth, creative and design quality, collaboration and development, alignment with company values, and mentoring and team development.
