PHP Developer - Cape Town (Hybrid)

Our client is seeking an experienced PHP Developer to take ownership of a critical, production-based software platform within the Revenue Systems environment. This is an exciting opportunity for a developer who enjoys working with established systems, driving continuous improvement, and becoming the in-house technical authority on a business-critical platform serving a growing customer base.

Key Responsibilities

• Take ownership of an existing PHP-based software platform and its ongoing development.
• Participate in structured knowledge transfer from the current external development partner.
• Support, maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance production applications.
• Develop new functionality and improve existing platform capabilities.
• Build and maintain RESTful APIs and third-party integrations.
• Optimise database performance, queries, and application efficiency.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and long-term platform evolution.
• Collaborate within Agile development teams and participate in code reviews.
• Maintain technical documentation and development standards.
• Ensure system reliability, scalability, and security best practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent commercial experience.
• Minimum 5 years of commercial PHP development experience.
• Strong experience with PHP 8 or later.
• Experience with Laravel and/or Symfony frameworks.
• Ability to work effectively with both modern and legacy PHP codebases.
• Strong MySQL and/or PostgreSQL experience.
• Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs.
• Understanding of OAuth2, JWT, API Keys, and secure integration practices.
• Experience with Git workflows, pull requests, and CI/CD environments.
• Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
