Pet Food Sales Representative

Our client, a prominent brand in the pet nutrition industry, is seeking a proactive External Sales Representative to accelerate the growth and visibility of their premium pet food products throughout Gauteng. This is a fully field-based position for a self-starter who thrives on targets and brings solid FMCG sales experience. You will be responsible for cultivating strong partnerships across a diverse customer network ranging from boutique pet shops and agricultural co-operatives to large retail chains and corporate pet store groups
- Identify, grow, and manage a diverse portfolio of retail and trade customers across Gauteng, including pet shops, SPAR, Pick n Pay, PetZone, farmer co-ops, independent retailers, and corporate pet store groups.
- Drive territory performance by meeting and exceeding monthly and quarterly sales, volume, and new listing targets.
- Conduct routine store visits and trade calls to ensure product availability, correct merchandising, and strong in‑store visibility.
- Present, position, and promote new product launches to both existing and potential customers.
- Negotiate pricing, trading terms, and promotional activities in alignment with company policies.
- Build and maintain long-standing relationships with key decision-makers, including buyers, store owners, and retail managers.
- Track and report on competitor activity, market shifts, and customer insights, providing meaningful feedback to management.
- Keep accurate and up-to-date call reports, sales documentation, and CRM entries.
- Plan and execute an efficient weekly call cycle to maximise territory coverage and productivity.
- Support in-store execution through merchandising, stock checks, and promotional rollouts.
- Service the following customer categories within Gauteng
- Retail chains: SPAR, Pick n Pay
- Specialist pet retailers: PetZone and similar stores
- Farmer and agricultural co-operatives
- Independent pet shops and animal feed stores
- Corporate pet shop groups and franchises
- Minimum Grade 12 (Matric); additional sales training or a relevant tertiary qualification is beneficial.
- At least 5 years’ proven sales experience within the FMCG environment; exposure to pet food, animal feed, or related categories will be highly advantageous.
- Fluency in English and Afrikaans is essential.
- Strong history of consistently achieving or surpassing sales targets.
- Existing relationships with Gauteng-based buyers, store owners, or pet trade stakeholders will be a notable advantage.
- Must have a reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license – non‑negotiable.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation abilities.
- A proactive self-starter with strong time management skills and the ability to operate independently in a field‑based role
- Competent in MS Office (including Excel), email communication, and comfortable working with CRM or sales reporting systems.
- Basic salary: R15,000 – R18,000 per month (negotiable based on experience)
- Commission structure based on sales performance
- Travel allowance / fuel reimbursement
