Senior Legal Counsel - Upstream Oil and Gas

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to provide strategic legal guidance across upstream oil and gas activities. This is an opportunity for a qualified South African lawyer with strong industry exposure to play a key role in navigating licensing, regulatory and litigation matters.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal advice on upstream oil and gas operations.
• Advise on South African licensing, permitting and regulatory requirements.
• Support exploration and production activities from a legal perspective.
• Draft, review and negotiate commercial and operational agreements.
• Manage legal disputes and coordinate external legal counsel.
• Develop and oversee litigation strategy where required.
• Monitor changes to relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks.
• Provide commercially focused legal advice to senior stakeholders.

Requirements

• Admitted and qualified South African lawyer.
• 8–10+ years of relevant legal experience.
• Strong upstream oil and gas industry experience.
• Sound knowledge of South African licensing, permitting and regulatory frameworks.
• Experience in exploration and production environments.
• Previous experience working for an oil and gas company or advising oil and gas clients within a law firm.
• Proven litigation management experience.
• Based in or willing to relocate to Cape Town.
