MPI is seeking a practical and forward-thinking Electronic or Computer Engineer to assist with the development of new products and integrated systems.

The successful candidate will report to and work closely with the Research and Development Lead, contributing to projects that require the design, implementation, testing and documentation of electronic hardware, embedded systems, and software systems (desktop, mobile and web).

The ideal candidate is comfortable working across both hardware and software and enjoys solving complex engineering problems within a team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development of new electronic products and systems.
  • Develop electronic schematics, circuits, and multilayer PCBs.
  • Select components and support prototyping, testing, debugging, and production.
  • Develop and maintain embedded software for microcontrollers, processors, sensors, and connected devices.
  • Develop and maintain desktop, mobile, and web applications where required.
  • Integrate hardware, firmware, communications, and software into complete systems.
  • Apply cybersecurity and secure-development principles throughout the development process.
  • Use Git and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins for version control, testing, building, and deployment.
  • Perform hardware, software, integration, and field testing.
  • Investigate faults and assist with troubleshooting and technical support.
  • Prepare clear technical documentation, specifications, test reports, user guides, and engineering records.
  • Communicate professionally with colleagues, clients, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide regular project progress, risks, and technical feedback to the Research and Development Lead.
  • Support product demonstrations, installations, commissioning, and field trials.
  • Stay up to date with emerging tools, components, and technologies, and propose improvements or new projects.
  • Collaborate in project planning, sprint reviews, and team brainstorming sessions.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic / Computer Engineering (0 – 3 yrs experience).
  • Understanding of and experience with analogue and digital electronic design.
  • Experience with schematic capture, PCB design, design reviews, prototyping, and electronic test, measurement, and assembly equipment.
  • Familiarity or experience with simulation and design tools such as LTspice, MATLAB, KiCad/EasyEDA/Altium, and CAD tools like Onshape/Fusion.
  • Experience with embedded development using C, C++, and Assembly.
  • Experience using IDEs like VS Code, STM32CubeIDE, MPLAB X, Cursor.
  • Familiarity with Linux, MCUs, MPUs, SOMs, and SBCs (such as STM32, ESP32, BeagleBone, Raspberry Pi), sensors, and communication interfaces (such as I2C, I2S, UART, SPI, USB, Ethernet, CAN, RS-485/Modbus, PCIe).
  • Experience with Cellular Modems, eSIMs, GNSS, LoRa, RFID/NFC is beneficial.
  • Front-end, back-end, and API software development experience in areas, including, desktop, mobile, or web, beyond embedded software, is beneficial.
  • Experience with Python; Beneficial: Bash, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS, SQL/SQLite/MongoDB/PostgreSQL, Redis, and AWS/Azure Cloud Computing.
  • Experience with Computer Vision or AI and Machine Learning is very beneficial.
  • Understanding or experience with Git, code reviews, automated testing, Jenkins, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • General understanding of cybersecurity, encryption and secure communications, authorisation, authentication, accounting/logging, and secure coding practices.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to produce professional and accurate technical documentation by using tools like Draw.io, Confluence, LaTeX, and the Microsoft 365 Suite.
  • Ability to work independently or in collaboration while following the technical direction and priorities set by the Team Lead.

Additional Beneficial Experience:

  • Experience developing a product from concept through prototyping, testing, and deployment.
  • Understanding of manufacturing, design for production, environmental testing, or product certification.

Salary will be between R 25 000 and R 35 000 a month negotiable based on skills and experience
