PURPOSE OF ROLE

The Responsible Person exists to supervise and control the safe execution of electrical and mechanical work on site, acting as the Responsible Person for applying for permits and conducting isolations.

The role provides suitable advice and assistance to the employer and contractors on measures needed for the safe and healthy execution of work, ensures compliance with OHSA, site safety procedures, and client requirements, and leads toolbox talks, safety briefings, and emergency preparedness activities. The Responsible Person also supervises contractors and work teams, supports plant reliability and quality assurance, and coordinates resources across engineering, operations, and project teams to promote a strong safety culture and operational excellence.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Apply for permits and conduct electrical and mechanical isolations.
  • Provide suitable advice and assistance to the employer and contractors on measures needed for safe and healthy execution of work.
  • Control and monitor work being done under permit.
  • Ensure compliance with OHSA, site safety procedures, and client requirements.
  • Lead toolbox talks, safety briefings, and emergency preparedness activities, and implement measures for incident prevention.
  • Make suitable arrangements for the co-ordination of health and safety measures during planning and preparation for the execution of work.
  • Supervise electrical and mechanical work on site, and coordinate contractors and work teams to ensure safe and efficient execution.
  • Identify hazards and co-ordinate work, and monitor progress against project schedules and operational priorities.
  • Verify that work complies with approved drawings, procedures, and specifications.
  • Monitor equipment condition, support preventative maintenance, and coordinate planned and emergency maintenance to minimise downtime.
  • Ensure quality inspections and close-out of NCRs are completed, and verify completion of testing, commissioning, and quality documentation.
  • Coordinate work activities with engineering, operations, and project teams, and manage labour, tools, materials, and equipment availability.
  • Monitor contractor performance and compliance with contractual obligations, and assist with planning shutdowns, outages, and commissioning activities.
  • Lead and mentor supervisors, artisans, and contractors, and conduct daily coordination and planning meetings.

QUALIFICATION

  • Responsible Person (RP) authorisation, or successfully completed PSR training at an Eskom station.
  • National Certificate (NQF Level 4) as an Electrical or Mechanical Artisan, or a National Diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Valid Trade Test, where applicable.
  • OHSA and Construction Regulations training.
  • Training in conducting Risk Assessments.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in construction, maintenance, or power generation.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in a supervisory or Responsible Person role.
  • Experience conducting Risk Assessments.
  • Experience working with Permit-to-Work systems and electrical isolations.
  • Experience supervising contractors and site construction activities.
  • Experience within power generation, industrial plants, or heavy engineering environments advantageous.
