REGIONAL LABORATORY MANAGER

National Asphalt has an exciting opportunity for a Regional Laboratory Manager to join our team. The successful candidate will be based at either our Bon Accord or Portland laboratory and will oversee multiple laboratory sites within the Gauteng or Cape region. Regular travel to these sites is a requirement of the role.
The Regional Laboratory Manager will be responsible for ensuring laboratory excellence across all assigned sites by maintaining compliance with testing standards, driving quality control, managing laboratory equipment and calibration, developing technical staff, and promoting continuous improvement in laboratory performance and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure all documented test methods and reference standards are strictly adhered to.
- Prepare and review daily Quality Control (QC) test plans and reports.
- Identify staff training requirements and coordinate development with Technical Managers.
- Ensure laboratories are maintained in accordance with applicable testing standards.
- Initiate, implement, and monitor corrective actions arising from testing feedback.
- Monitor and record environmental conditions in accordance with documented procedures.
- Maintain all relevant technical literature, including manufacturers' manuals.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance and intermediate equipment check schedules.
- Verify and review all laboratory records, test results, and documentation.
- Ensure all equipment calibration is traceable to national and international standards.
- Manage the timely recalibration of laboratory equipment before expiry dates.
- Optimize laboratory resources to ensure efficient operations.
- Maintain accurate recordkeeping throughout all testing and quality control processes.
- Review and authorize daily laboratory records.
- Ensure the safe handling, storage, and disposal of samples and laboratory materials.
- Review completed test worksheets for accuracy and completeness.
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and training to laboratory technicians.
- Coordinate inter-laboratory comparison programmes and evaluate results.
- Ensure periodic calculation and review of measurement uncertainty for all applicable test methods.
- Oversee both preventive and corrective maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Manage the procurement and availability of laboratory consumables.
- Investigate and resolve customer complaints in a professional and timely manner.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- Degree or National Diploma in Civil Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- 5–8 years' relevant industry experience in a laboratory or quality environment.
- Strong business acumen.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good report-writing ability.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- A commitment to teamwork and a willingness to go the extra mile to achieve team objectives.
