Qualified Steel Fixer – Job Summary

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Steel Fixer to join our building construction team. The successful candidate will be responsible for reading and interpreting structural drawings, cutting, bending, positioning, and securely fixing reinforcing steel (rebar) and reinforcing mesh for concrete structures. The Steel Fixer will ensure that all reinforcement is installed accurately and in accordance with engineering specifications, project requirements, and South African building standards.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in building construction, a strong understanding of reinforcement detailing and installation techniques, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and productivity. The successful applicant must be able to work independently and as part of a team while adhering to all site health and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Reading Blueprints: Interpret structural and engineering drawings to find the correct size, shape, and placement of steel bars.

Cutting and Bending: Use hand tools, power tools, or heavy machinery to shape rebar and mesh to exact specifications.

Assembling Cages: Tie rebar intersections using wire, specialized pliers, clips, or welds to build robust reinforcement cages.

Positioning and Securing: Place rebar frameworks accurately into formwork for foundations, walls, columns, and beams.

Fitting Supports: Install plastic or concrete spacers and chairs to maintain precise clearance and concrete cover over the steel.

Site Collaboration: Work alongside civil engineers, site foremen, shuttering carpenters, and concrete-pouring teams to meet project deadlines.

Responsible for cutting, bending, positioning, and securing reinforcing steel (rebar) and mesh used to strengthen concrete structures in building construction projects.

Working from structural drawings and specifications, Ensures that reinforcement is accurately installed before concrete is poured, contributing to the structural integrity and safety of buildings. Strong understanding of reinforcement detailing, construction methods, quality standards, and compliance with South African health and safety regulations. Work independently or as part of a construction team while consistently delivering high-quality workmanship on residential, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects.

Positions and secures steel bars (rebar) and mesh inside concrete forms to reinforce structures like foundations, columns, and slabs. Interpret structural plans, cut and bend metal components, and tie frameworks together before concrete is poured.

High level of physical strength and stamina to handle heavy steel bars and work in diverse weather conditions.

Safety Compliance: Strict adherence to South African Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act regulations, wearing required PPE, and safety protocols at heights.Technical Know-how: Practical knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and reading technical site plans.

Qualification Requirements

Grade 10 (NQF Level 2) or equivalent; Grade 12 is advantageous.

A recognised qualification or Trade Certificate in Steel Fixing, Reinforcing, or a related construction trade will be advantageous.

Minimum of 3–5 years' proven experience as a Steel Fixer in the building construction industry.

Demonstrated ability to read and interpret structural drawings, reinforcement schedules, and bending schedules.

Sound knowledge of reinforcing steel installation, tying methods, spacing, cover requirements, and concrete reinforcement principles.

Proficient in the use of steel fixing tools and equipment, including rebar cutters, benders, tying tools, grinders, and measuring equipment.

Good understanding of the National Building Regulations (SANS) and construction quality standards.

Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and safe working practices on construction sites.

Valid construction site safety induction; Working at Heights certification will be advantageous where required.

Physically fit and medically capable of performing demanding construction work.

Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary construction team.

Excellent attention to detail, time management, and commitment to quality workmanship.
