Cloud Product Owner (AWS and Azure)

Alinta Tech Solutions

Date: 3 days ago
City: Cape Town, Western Cape
Contract type: Full time

The Cloud Product Owner (CPO) is responsible for the operational ownership and continuous improvement of cloud products and services across AWS and Azure. The role ensures cloud platforms are reliable, secure, compliant, and consumable across the organisation by managing the cloud service catalogue, prioritising and refining the delivery backlog, and translating the organisation's cloud strategy and standards into executable work that improves platform stability, delivery throughput, and governance.

The CPO maintains a multi-cloud service roadmap aligned to the organisation's cloud strategy, reference architectures, and governance standards, ensuring AWS and Azure capabilities are packaged into clear, supportable services such as landing zones, connectivity, identity, logging, encryption, container platforms, and data services. Working within a federated operating model, the CPO enables technology teams to deliver outcomes autonomously within agreed governance, security, and compliance boundaries by providing well-defined service offerings, onboarding pathways, and operational support models. The role coordinates regular cloud service reviews to assess demand, incidents, problem trends, backlog progress, and adoption, while adjusting priorities in collaboration with cloud leadership and operational stakeholders.

The Cloud Product Owner serves as the central point of accountability for cross-functional cloud delivery and operations teams, working closely with cloud architects, platform engineers, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), operations, security, risk and compliance, FinOps, and technology leadership. The role drives execution through backlog refinement, clearly defined acceptance criteria, dependency management, and operational readiness. The CPO champions Agile delivery practices and continuous improvement, ensuring cloud services remain measurable, supportable, resilient, and aligned with organisational standards.

The role also manages demand and stakeholder engagement across business and technology teams by gathering requirements, shaping service requests into prioritised backlog items, and managing expectations regarding delivery timelines, risks, and trade-offs. The CPO works closely with security, risk, and compliance teams to ensure governance and control requirements such as logging, encryption, identity management, data residency, and auditability are embedded into cloud services. Using data-driven insights, the role measures service performance and business value through availability, service level objectives (SLOs), deployment performance, provisioning lead times, cost-to-serve, and overall cloud security posture across AWS and Azure.

The Cloud Product Owner owns and prioritises the cloud product backlog for operational cloud services, balancing foundational platform capabilities with high-value enablement for business technology teams. The role ensures backlog items are well defined, technically feasible, and deliver measurable improvements in speed, reliability, security, and cost efficiency. The CPO collaborates with cloud operations, engineering, infrastructure, security, project management, and external partners to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality cloud capabilities and shared governance controls while maintaining consistency across AWS and Azure platforms.

1. Cloud Strategy & Product Management

• Maintain and communicate the cloud service roadmap and service catalogue across AWS and Azure, ensuring alignment with the organisation's cloud strategy, reference architectures, and governance standards.

• Translate organisational cloud standards and business requirements into actionable roadmaps and prioritised backlog items covering landing zones, networking, identity, security controls, observability, container platforms, and data services.

• Facilitate regular cloud service reviews with business and technology stakeholders to assess service demand, incident and problem trends, adoption, cloud expenditure, backlog progress, and operational performance.

• Continuously review priorities and manage dependencies to maximise business value and platform stability.

2. Cloud Platform Leadership

• Act as the primary point of accountability for cloud platform delivery across architecture, engineering, operations, security, risk, compliance, FinOps, and technology teams.

• Foster collaboration by promoting reusable cloud patterns, standardised templates, automation, and shared controls that improve reliability, security, governance, and developer experience.

• Champion Agile delivery practices and governance ceremonies to ensure sprint objectives align with organisational priorities, security requirements, resilience standards, and self-service enablement.

• Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance cloud platform maturity, operational efficiency, and service quality.

3. Stakeholder Engagement & Value Delivery

• Build strong relationships with stakeholders across business units and enterprise technology teams to understand requirements, validate priorities, and manage expectations.

• Collaborate with architecture, security, finance, operations, engineering, and compliance teams to ensure cloud services meet business objectives while maintaining governance standards.

• Use data-driven insights and performance metrics to evaluate cloud services, including cloud spend, budget adherence, service availability, deployment frequency, security posture, provisioning times, and operational performance.

• Promote continuous feedback from cloud service consumers to improve adoption, onboarding, operational support, documentation, and overall user experience.

4. Product Backlog & Delivery Management

• Own, prioritise, and maintain the cloud product backlog, balancing foundational platform capabilities with business enablement initiatives.

• Ensure backlog items are clearly defined with measurable outcomes, acceptance criteria, governance requirements, and non-functional requirements.

• Work closely with cloud engineers, architects, operations teams, and business stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable, and reliable cloud services.

• Support operational readiness by ensuring monitoring, documentation, support processes, automation, and access models are established before production deployment.

5. Innovation & Continuous Improvement

• Identify opportunities to improve cloud services through standardisation, automation, reusable architectures, and self-service capabilities.

• Support proof-of-concepts and pilot initiatives that validate new cloud technologies, services, and operating models.

• Stay current with AWS and Azure service enhancements, cloud technologies, regulatory developments, and industry best practices.

• Recommend new technologies, frameworks, and operational improvements that increase business value, reduce operational complexity, and strengthen cloud governance.

• Bachelor's degree in Business, Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Minimum of 8 years' experience in digital product ownership, product management, or cloud platform delivery, with significant experience delivering cloud-enabled products and platforms using AWS and/or Azure.

• Proven experience leading cross-functional teams within enterprise cloud environments, successfully bridging business objectives with engineering delivery.

• Demonstrated experience delivering cloud capabilities including landing zones, networking, identity and access management (IAM), containers and Kubernetes, serverless computing, managed databases, and integration platforms.

• Strong understanding of cloud security, governance, resilience, disaster recovery, operational excellence, and IT service management principles.

• Practical experience working within Agile, DevOps, and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) environments.

• Previous experience as a Cloud Product Owner, Platform Product Owner, or in a similar cloud leadership role.

• AWS and/or Microsoft Azure certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, AWS or Azure Security, or DevOps certifications will be advantageous.

• Experience within Financial Services, Banking, Insurance, or another highly regulated enterprise environment will be advantageous.

Success Measures

Success in this role will be measured by the successful delivery, adoption, and continuous improvement of cloud products and services across the organisation.

• Successful delivery of the cloud service roadmap in alignment with organisational cloud strategy, governance standards, and business priorities.

• Achievement of cloud operational KPIs, including service availability, SLO attainment, deployment frequency, lead time for change, provisioning times, and cloud cost optimisation.

• Increased stakeholder satisfaction through improved adoption of cloud services and enhanced collaboration across business and technology teams.

• Delivery of secure, scalable, and resilient cloud platforms that meet governance, compliance, and operational requirements.

• Continuous improvement in delivery speed, platform reliability, security posture, audit readiness, and operational efficiency.

• Effective backlog management, dependency management, and prioritisation that delivers measurable business value.

• Improved cloud governance, standardisation, automation, and self-service capabilities across the organisation.

• Demonstrated leadership in fostering innovation, engineering excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement across cloud platform teams.
