Purpose of the position
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role within project delivery, ensuring that construction requirements are met across all sites so that customers identify Proconics as a trusted and critical partner to their business. You will ensure that the multidisciplinary engineering and design intent is being carried through the construction phase, supporting safe and successful construction completion, and ensuring sign-off commissioning and start-up success. The major responsibilities of this position are to plan and execute multidisciplinary construction projects and oversee their progress along the way in a timely and cost-effective manner within the contract requirements. You will be responsible for the onsite safety compliance, budgeting, organizing, implementation, and scheduling of the projects. You will be responsible to manage direct reports: supervisors, safety officers & environmental officers as well as any subcontractors appointed to assist in completing the works safely, within budget, on schedule and delivering a high standard.
Qualifications/Experience
- Technical diploma or relevant trade test
- Registered or in the process of registration as a Professional Construction Manager (Pr.CM) or Construction Project Manager (Pr.CPM) with the SACPCMP
- 5+ years’ relevant experience (multidisciplinary with a strong competency on electrical and instrumentation scopes of work) in the Petrochemical/Energy sector with a proven track record
- Experience in the Sasol environment
- Strong competency in MV and LV switchgear replacements and commissioning procedures.
- Taking accountability and responsibility of all construction and safety related aspects on site as stipulated in CR 8(1) and have a passion for a zero-harm culture through safe construction solutions.
- Understanding of all the different construction process and phases,
- Familiarity with software packages such as, MS Office, MS Projects,
- Good knowledge of the New Engineering Contracts (NEC3) Engineering and Construction Contracts (ECC) types of contracts,
- Ability to plan proactively towards achieving the “big picture”,
- Competency in conflict and crisis management with a professional approach.
- Leadership and resources planning with management skills.
- Knowledge of Brownfields, Greenfields and multidisciplinary construction management and challenges,
- Knowledge of applicable construction codes, standards, and regulations.
- Strong ability to read and interpret design drawings.
- Willingness to work long hours to achieve schedule compliance.
- Adaptable to time frame changes in schedules, or operational demands
- Must be able to construct safe and fit for purpose solutions
- Driver’s License and own transport
- Willing to relocate to Secunda, Mpumalanga as well as managing sites within the larger ProGroup.
Required Outputs and Responsibilities
- The Construction Manager will report to the Senior Manager: Construction Management, and the corresponding Project Managers
- Legal responsibilities as per Construction Regulations (CR) 8.1 (core) and/or 8.2,
- Oversee and direct construction projects from initial phase to completion including sign-off/handover.
- Assist Senior Manager: Construction Management to develop and implement construction management processes and procedures based on industry best practices,
- Review the project schedule in-depth and implement cost saving and onsite management
- Oversee all onsite and offsite construction to monitor compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act Regulations,
- Technical queries to be addressed and resolved with all relevant stakeholders
- Construction site housekeeping and day-to-day site operational management
- Evaluate vendor proposals for bid clarifications (fit for purpose)
- Meet contractual obligations of performance and standards.
- Develop and track daily construction activities in line with the Proconics CM execution strategy and procedures (Safety, Integrity, Schedule and Cost)
- Develop and track a two-week look ahead and review the projects health status
- Prepare daily internal and external reports pertaining to job status.
- Plan your work and work the plan principle to be implemented
- Negotiate terms of agreement prior to construction and obtain all relevant permits
- Arrange and manage site establishments, mobilization and de-mobilization in according with the site establishment procedures.
