Job Purpose

The Environmental and Water Quality Officer will be responsible for monitoring, assessing, and improving environmental performance and drinking water quality to ensure compliance with national legislation, environmental standards, and public health requirements. The incumbent will support water quality surveillance programmes, environmental management initiatives, pollution prevention, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement water quality monitoring programmes.
• Conduct routine sampling of drinking water, surface water, groundwater, wastewater, and environmental media.
• Perform field inspections and environmental compliance assessments.
• Interpret laboratory results and prepare technical reports.
• Monitor compliance with drinking water quality standards and environmental legislation.
• Investigate pollution incidents and recommend corrective actions.
• Support implementation of Water Safety Plans and Water Quality Surveillance programmes.
• Coordinate environmental awareness and community education programmes.
• Maintain environmental monitoring databases and prepare monthly and annual reports.
• Liaise with regulatory authorities, laboratories, municipalities, and other stakeholders.
• Participate in environmental audits and risk assessments.
• Assist in developing environmental management plans and emergency response procedures.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Health, Water Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related qualification.
• Minimum of three (3) years’ relevant work experience in environmental management, water quality monitoring, water treatment, environmental compliance, or related fields.
• Knowledge of water quality standards, environmental legislation, and monitoring techniques.
• Experience in environmental sampling and data analysis.
• Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office. Applicants must own a computer.
• Valid driver’s licence.
