A company distributing analytical instruments and reagents is looking for a Field Applications Specialist (FAS) to join their Elemental Analysis (EA) & Isotope-ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) team in Cape Town. The successful candidate's key responsibilities will include but are not limited to: The specialist will assist customers within the analytical disciplines of Elemental Analysis and Isotope-Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) through efficient installation, commissioning, training, demonstration, exhibition, problem-solving, optimization, development and advanced troubleshooting (on- or off-site) of hardware- and software-related platforms and analytical methods. While existing knowledge and experience in Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) and Inductively coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) are highly advantageous, the scope of this role may be expanded to include these and other related analytical techniques (Protein Chromatography, Nutrient- and Water Analyses) as the strategic needs of the organisation evolve. To support this professional development and scope expansion, comprehensive training on these additional platforms will be provided by the company as part of the employee's ongoing growth. The specialist will assist sales in pre- and post-sales activities, including: Customer- and lead profiling, and lead qualification. Participating in technical discussions to build, review, and ensure strict adherence to bidding- and tender specifications. Collaborating in the creation of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and user requirement specifications (URS) as part of pre-sales activities. Leading or participating in site acceptance testing (SAT) as part of post-sales activities, to ensure complex analytical systems meet contractual and technical compliance. Leading pre- and post-sales technical discussions, offering consultative advice to design accurate hardware and software configurations that accurately align with customer needs. Conducting on-site and remote visits (Either independently or with the sales- or technical teams) that foster and maintain customer relationships and satisfaction, including provision of customer testimonials. Articulating the company's technical capabilities and value-sell propositions via strategic presentations and product demonstrations, collaborated directly or indirectly with sales personnel. The specialist will assist in the support of Field Service- and Applications-personnel through horizontal skill transfer, hardware- and software diagnostics, and practical instrument diagnostics and repairs. The specialist will work closely with the training team and the rest of the applications team to create, edit, and present technical training materials as part of the organisation's training academy on a quarterly basis. Key Requirements: Honours degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g., Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related Analytical Science). Proven practical experience and deep technical understanding of Elemental Analysis and Isotope-Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS). Prior operational experience or theoretical knowledge of LC-MS and ICP-OES systems is highly beneficial. Sound laboratory knowledge, technical troubleshooting capabilities. Additional Requirements: Highly motivated, proactive, and independent, yet an excellent team player. Willing to adhere to realistic deadlines and possess the initiative to get the job done under pressure. Must be willing and able to travel across South Africa to support regional client sites, with the flexibility for occasional international travel into Sub-Saharan Africa, or to Agency headquarters when product training is required.
