Senior Java Backend Developer

Our client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Java Backend Developer to join a growing engineering team building enterprise-grade financial technology solutions. This role is best suited to a hands-on senior developer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, designing scalable backend systems and contributing to modern cloud-native architecture. Candidates based in Johannesburg are preferred for an office-based environment, while exceptional Cape Town-based candidates may be considered for remote work.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable Java backend applications.
• Build and support distributed microservices using the Spring ecosystem.
• Develop event-driven systems using modern messaging patterns.
• Collaborate with Product, DevOps and Engineering teams to deliver new features.
• Participate in architecture discussions and technical decision-making.
• Improve platform reliability, scalability and maintainability.
• Write clean, maintainable code and comprehensive technical documentation.
• Conduct code reviews and mentor fellow developers.
• Support production systems and resolve complex technical issues.
• Drive continuous improvement and technical best practices.

Minimum Requirements

• 7–10+ years of Java backend development experience.
• Minimum 2+ years operating in a Senior Java Developer role.
• Strong experience with Spring Boot and the wider Spring ecosystem.
• Proven experience developing distributed microservices.
• Deep understanding of event-driven architecture, Kafka and asynchronous messaging.
• Strong SQL and PostgreSQL (or similar relational database) experience.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes is advantageous.
• Exposure to AWS and/or Azure cloud platforms is beneficial.
• Strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Experience within banking, fintech or regulated industries will be advantageous.
