Environmental Permit Consultant

Manhattan Corporation is seeking an experienced Environmental Permit Consultant to lead environmental permitting and regulatory compliance for a producing mining operation on the East Rand.

This is a critical, high-impact role requiring a specialist with extensive experience navigating South Africa's mining and environmental regulatory framework. The successful candidate will play a key role in securing statutory approvals, removing regulatory bottlenecks, and ensuring projects remain on schedule.

• Lead and manage environmental permitting for mining operations.
• Drive statutory approvals through the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), and other relevant regulatory authorities.
• Prepare, coordinate and oversee:
  • Environmental Authorisations (EA)
  • Waste Management Licences (WML)
  • Water Use Licences (WUL)
  • Environmental Management Programme Reports (EMPr), including amendments and updates.
• Lead Section 102 amendment applications in terms of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA).
• Manage Section 24G rectification applications in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) where applicable.
• Expedite Section 102 amendments, Section 24G applications and permit amendments to minimise project delays and maintain operational continuity.
• Liaise directly with regulatory authorities, environmental specialists, consultants and internal project teams.
• Ensure ongoing compliance with the MPRDA, NEMA, and other applicable environmental legislation.
• Identify permitting risks and implement practical mitigation strategies.

• Registered Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) with EAPASA (essential). Candidate EAPs will be considered only if working under the supervision of a registered EAP.
• Proven environmental permitting experience within the South African mining industry.
• Demonstrated experience managing Section 102 (MPRDA) and Section 24G (NEMA) applications for mining operations.
• Please note: Experience limited to power generation, construction, infrastructure or general environmental consulting without mining permitting experience will not be considered.
• Relevant qualification in Environmental Science, Natural Sciences or a related discipline.
• SACNASP registration will be advantageous.
• Strong working knowledge of DMRE and DFFE permitting processes.
• Proven ability to obtain regulatory approvals within demanding project timeframes.
• Established professional relationships within regulatory authorities will be advantageous.
• Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
